International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organisations

T

he International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organisations (IAHAIO), was founded in 1990 to gather together national associations and related organisations interested in advancing the understanding and appreciation of the link between animals and humans. As worldwide support for this young science increases, IAHAIO provides a communication link to convey latest research findings and encourage further programme development. SCAS, the UK based Society for Companion Animal Studies, is a founder member of IAHAIO, and this year is the host organisation of the IAHAIO International Conference.

The theme of the IAHAIO 10th International Conference (Glasgow, 6-9 October 2004) is the examination of the timeless relationship between people and animals, focusing especially on evidence of the health, therapeutic and educational benefits this relationship offers to people at all stages of life. Education and training will be highlighted, particularly the development of training programmes for veterinary, medical, social work and teaching professions. The IAHAIO Geneva Declaration, Guidelines for Animal-Assisted Therapy, and Declaration on Pets in Schools will be highlighted. In the UK there are many exciting developments and much expertise to share with international delegates. The general public will be invited to visit on the final day of the conference.
